Important Programs for Older Adults

Benefits and Rights of Pennsylvania’s Older Adults

  • Considering looking into a home equity loan through a reverse mortgage?
  • Confused (as many of us are) by the maze of programs and policy options available from Medicare, Medicaid, prescription plans, long-term care insurance policies, and other programs?
  • Where can you go for no-cost help with filing your annual income taxes?
  • What’s available for medical and non-medical care in your home?
  • Are there programs that give caregivers a break during the day?

These and other questions about aging are touched on in the following basic information on benefits, rights, and programs for Pennsylvania’s older adults. For more detailed information, contact the local, state, or federal agencies listed following the descriptions.

Please return periodically to this website link to learn about additional programs and benefits.

Northampton County Area Agency on Aging

This agency deserves special attention since it is the primary resource for many of the programs listed below. The following text is quoted from the Agency’s booklet under the title, “What We Do.”

“Area Agencies on Aging provide local services, act as advocates, and generally assist older citizens to remain active in their communities. We operate under program guidance from the Pennsylvania Department of Aging, with county, state, and federal funding.

“The purpose of the Area Agency on Aging is to plan and coordinate the provision of services to older adults in Northampton County.

“These services, either delivered directly, purchased services from a community agency, or by cooperative agreement, are designed to enhance the independence and dignity of older adults, and to provide protection as well.

“The Area Agency on Aging serves residents of Northampton County who are 60 years of age or older. No distinction is made on the basis of race, color, nationality, creed, sex, or income. The Agency is an Affirmative Action Employer and Provider.”
